Authorities in the Principality of Ruhnu have arrested several members of the Ruhnu Democratic Movement (RDM) following yesterday's political demonstrations against the monarchy.
The arrests were made early this morning by the Principality's security forces on charges of disturbing the peace and inciting political unrest. Among those detained is RDM spokesperson Karin Mägi, who had publicly called for democratic reforms just one day prior.
Prince Björke I issued a statement through his office, saying: "While we respect the right to peaceful expression, we cannot allow activities that threaten the stability and security of our young nation. The rule of law must be maintained during these formative times."
The arrests have sparked controversy among Ruhnu's small population, with some citizens expressing concern about the swift response to political dissent. Others have voiced support for the government's actions, citing the need for order and stability.
Chief of Security Lars Eriksson confirmed that five individuals were taken into custody and are being held pending formal charges. "These arrests were made in accordance with Ruhnu law and were necessary to prevent further escalation of tensions," Eriksson stated.
The detained individuals are expected to appear before a magistrate within 48 hours. Legal observers note that this represents the first major test of Ruhnu's judicial system since the principality's establishment.
International micronation observers have called for the peaceful resolution of the situation and respect for democratic principles. The events have drawn attention to the challenges facing newly established micronations in balancing authority with democratic freedoms.
The situation remains tense as the principality grapples with its first major political crisis, just over a week after its founding.
